With numbers traditionally enervate for mid-season friendlies, Hilderinc FC had to arouse themselves from the frustration of considerable eleventh hour withdrawals to produce a creditable outing against Maristis FC at Farrer Park football pitch, Singapore football’s spiritual home.
Having the bare minimum to cover all positions, albeit with Sunny Tharidu filling up in goal, three trialists, a still under the weather Rama Witjaksono, long lost returning prodigal son, Sai Ganesan, and an injured Ian Morris, who offered nothing meaningful on the pitch apart from keeping parity in numbers, the Blacks decided to take the ultra-conservative approach as supposed to their usual cavalier dazzle.
Always playing on consistent artificial pitches, the return to natural grass was an uncomfortable affair, especially when the hard ground proved more a challenge than expected.
While the quality of the opposition allowed the Hilderincs to take the foot of the pedals, they took the pre-match instruct to enjoy the game quite literally and found themselves behind early in the game through a comical goal as they were still on the beach with a cocktail in hand.
However, despite the disadvantages, the quality in the Hilderincs was telling as they spent much time inside the Maristis’ half, although Sunny Tharidu took the plaudits for keeping them in the game with a few commendable saves when the opponents did manage to find their way through.
With Danish Saarin, Rama Witjaksono, Sashikumar Mahathevan and Sai Ganesan active in the attacking third, the Blacks best chance of a goal would ironically fall to the crocked Ian Morris, who though reacted fastest to the Maristis goalkeeper’s clanger, sent the ball a foot wide of the post as he struggled to get even a decent application.
The second half was even more unhurried from the Blacks though they enjoyed more of the attacking imitative but with incomplete striking options, the chances lacked the end.
But there was no denying Sashikumar Mahathevan, who took matters into his own hands and levelled the score with a determined run past the Maristis defence before a prefect finish.
While the Blacks were to go behind again following casual approach to the innocuous, they shared the honours when Sai Ganesh marked his return with a well-taken freekick to give a deserve outlook to a game which could have provided more had the numbers and pitch were better on the day.
Despite that, it was full marks for the Blacks, who though took a lesser approach, gave full effort when needed, earning good reviews even from the referee who had good words of their professional display.
